Goonellabah is located up the hill from Lismore and was safe from the major flood of 28 February 2022 which devastated the low-lying areas of Lismore. Many businesses are now relocating to the Goonellabah Industrial Estate to be out of the reach of future floods.
Goonellabah has extensive sporting fields adjacent to the Lismore Workers Sports Club in Oliver Avenue, Invercauld House which is associated with Southern Cross University and provides a function centre for both University and private events, as well as the Goonellabah Tavern located on Ballina Road which is a central gathering place for many of the local residents.
